A mobile node acts both as a host and a router forwarding packets to other nodes. Because of the nature of ad hoc networks, there are special demands for ad hoc routing protocols. Certainly, the performance is the most desired issue. This paper presents our efforts in measuring and comparing the performance of ad hoc routing protocols by simulating with the use of NS2 (Network Simulator version 2) package. Three major protocols are considered (DSDV, DSR and AODV). The simulation results show the performance of the protocols and allow us to make conclusions of each one and to compare one with the others.
