Consisting of a large number of low complexity camera nodes, visual sensor networks support a tremendous range of new vision-based applications from surveillance, environmental monitoring to virtual reality. However, one of the main challenges in practical visual sensor network is how to process and transmit visual data at limited hardware sensor nodes and in constrained bandwidth conditions. Therefore, the selection of a suitable video compression algorithm is very important. To address this requirement, this paper proposes a Raspberry Pi based low complexity High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) solution for visual sensor networks. Experimental results show that the proposed architecture has good compression performance with acceptable complexity performance.
