"Abstract Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), well-\r\nknown as an important scientific achievement, are now\r\nconsidered as one of the most persistent organic\r\npollutants (POPs) that need to be strictly controlled\r\nand forbidden worldwide (the Stockholm convention\r\non POPs). Vietnam is one of the countries that\r\nencounters with serious issues from PCB contamina-\r\ntion. This study presented a comprehensive review on\r\nthe status and contamination of PCBs along the coast\r\nof Vietnam. The contaminated PCBs data in the water,\r\nsediment and biological samples from 18 provinces\r\nalong Vietnam coastline were collected from various\r\nsources. A comparison in PCBs contamination\r\nbetween Vietnam and other Asian countries was\r\nincluded. The status on PCBs contamination in\r\nVietnam since participated as a party of the Stockholm\r\nconvention on POPs in 2002 was also assessed. The\r\nresults showed that Vietnam is facing serious PCBs\r\ncontamination problems as it evidences the spread and\r\naccumulation of PCBs in the marine environment. The\r\nimplementation of the Stockholm convention on POPs\r\n(PCBs in particular) has not yet demonstrated signif-\r\nicant effect on the reduction in PCBs contamination in\r\nthe environment. This information on PCBs contam-\r\nination in Vietnam urges government to strengthen the\r\nmechanism, policy and legislation, the management\r\ncapacity for PCBs as well as applying advanced and\r\nmodern technologies in reducing, disposing and\r\neliminating PCBs from the environment."^^ .
