"In this paper, the nickel (Ni) coatings reinforced carbon nanomaterials including graphene\r\nnanoplatelets (GNPs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) andMWCNTs/GNPs hybrid\r\nmaterial prepared by the electrodeposition technique were investigated. GNPs andMWCNTswere\r\nfunctionalized with carboxylic (–COOH) function groups (GNPs–COOH,MWCNTs–COOH) then\r\nuniformly dispersed into Watts solution for the electrodeposition process. The obtained results\r\nrevealed that the microhardness of the Ni coating reinforcedCOOHfunctionalized carbon\r\nnanomaterials is much improved compared to the bare Ni coating and Ni coating containing carbon\r\nnanomaterials without functional groups. The Ni coating containingMWCNTs–COOH/GNPs–\r\nCOOHhybrid material showed the highest hardness value of 270HVthat is higher 44.7% compared\r\nto the bare Ni coating. The enhancement was attributed to the uniform dispersion of functionalized\r\ncarbon nanomaterials in Ni matrix, the synergistic strengthening effect of theMWCNTsand GNPs,\r\nthe grain refinement of Ni matrix and the enhanced load transfer effect from Ni matrix toMWCNTs\r\nand GNPs via atomic bonding during the electrodeposition process."^^ .
