"Routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) is an\r\nessential problem in designing, operating and managing elastic\r\noptical networks to achieve spectrum efficiency and thus, efficient\r\nalgorithms for solving the RSA has been of crucial importance.\r\nThe conventional Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP)\r\nformulation has a critical drawback of scalability and hence has\r\nbeen applicable to only small data instances while heuristic-based\r\napproach is prone to locally optimal solutions without guarantees\r\nfor global optimality. In order to mitigate the scalability issue of\r\nthe traditional MILP models and possibly low-quality solutions\r\nfrom heuristic, we investigate an approach based on the column\r\ngeneration (CG) method for solving the RSA problem by presenting an efficient CG-based formulation and numerically evaluate\r\nit on various realistic network topologies with full mesh traffic.\r\nThe performance of our CG-based approach is benchmarked\r\nwith the typical heuristic, First-Fit algorithm, and it has been\r\nrevealed that our CG proposal can provide better solutions in\r\nmost cases and the solution gap could be up to more than 20%"^^ .
