"Climate change is predicted to increase the\r\nprobability of soil waterlogging due to severe rainfall,\r\ncausing significant damage to soybean at the germination stage. Germination under waterlogging is also\r\ngreatly influenced by temperature. To clarify the\r\nvariation in germination responses of soybean genotypes to waterlogging at different temperatures, the\r\nseeds of 15 soybean genotypes were treated by\r\nsoaking for 2 days at four temperatures: 21 C,\r\n23 C, 25 C, 27 C and 29 C. Differences in the\r\ngermination rate (GR) and normal seedling rate (NSR)were observed among soybean genotypes after soaking treatments regardless of the temperature. Among\r\nthe examined genotypes, Iyodaizu was classified as\r\nwaterlogging tolerant at the germination stage, and\r\nTachinagaha was classified as sensitive. Interestingly,\r\nthrough the analyses of recombinant inbred lines\r\n(RILs) developed from a cross between Tachinagaha\r\nand Iyodaizu, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for root\r\ndevelopment under hypoxia at the seedling stage of\r\nsoybean were detected on chromosome 12\r\n(Chr.12).We investigated whether the candidate QTL\r\nregion for root development is involved in seed\r\nwaterlogging tolerance by using a near-isogenic line\r\n(NIL), NIL-9-4-5. Interestingly, under soaking treatment, the GR and NSR of NIL-9-4-5, carrying the\r\ncandidate QTL region, was nearly the same as that of\r\nIyodaizu and was significantly higher than that of\r\nTachinagaha. These results may indicate that the\r\ncandidate QTL region for root development under\r\nhypoxia at the seedling stage located on Chr.12\r\ncontributes to the seed waterlogging tolerance of\r\nsoybean plants at the germination stage."^^ . . .
