Previous studies on reliable SFCs ignore the impact of physical hardware failures when multiple virtual network functions (VNFs) are deployed on the same server, resulting in inaccurate reliability estimates. In this paper, we first propose an optimization model and approximation algorithm, considering both hardware and software reliability, to maximize the reliability of SFCs in each service demand. We then develop an algorithm to increase the reliability of SFCs to a given requirement. The evaluation results show that our algorithms achieve a near-optimal solution with a significant reduction in the computational time for finding the placement of redundant VNFs.
