Abstract

Recently, offshore wind energy has received much attention in Vietnam; however, the understanding of its potential is insufficient to sparse in situ observations. This study introduce a numerical approach for studying the offshore wind potential in the southern Vietnam. A regional climate model used to simulate wind field is configured so that the inner most domain covers whole the region of interest with the grid spacing of 10 × 10 km. The model is run for 12 months of 2012 to capture the annual variation of wind. The results show the southern Vietnam region is characterized by strong seasonal and spatial variabilities in both wind speed and direction. In particular, the offshore areas of Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces are likely to have the largest wind power potential as well as the strong seasonal variation. This study demonstrates that the numerical approach can fill the gap of measurements and the results obtained can be used to identify optimal locations for offshore wind farms over the region.
